Student reaction to the election of Herbert Hoover [manuscript], 1928 November 7.

Newspaper clippings describe students burning "religious intolerance" in effigy and shrouding statues of Thomas Jefferson in black with a card reading "To the Memory of Jeffersonian Democracy and Religious Freedom in Virginia -- died November 6, 1928. Both were reactions to the election of Herbert Hoover and the defeat of Al Smith, the first time Virginia voted for a Republican presidential candidate since Reconstruction.
